Lunar New Year
Hello Families,
Lunar New Year begins tomorrow Saturday 2/10. I wanted to take this opportunity to share information about this celebration with all of you. Our Busy Bees teacher Miss Kristina's family is Cantonese and she celebrates Chinese New Year. Kristina is sharing her traditions and celebrations with her students and they are really enjoying what they are learning. The Friendly Fish classroom is also learning about Lunar New Year. Please keep an eye out for this weeks newsletter to learn more. Happy New Year Kristina and to all who celebrate!
Lunar New Year: also known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, is a 15-day festival that is celebrated in many Asian countries. It originated during China's Shang Dynasty and it has many traditions, so here are three common New Year traditions from around the world. Many people celebrate the new year by cleaning their homes from top to bottom to get rid of bad luck from the previous year. Some people say it is important to clean before the 15-day celebration begins, while others dedicate the first day of the Lunar New Year to cleaning. During Lunar New Year it is traditional to be gifted money in red envelopes by family, friends and even colleagues. In China these envelopes are known as Hónɡ bāo, in the Philippines, they are called Ang Pao and in Vietnam, the red envelopes are called Li xi. During the festivities, some people buy new clothing to attract good luck while others buy new traditional clothing to wear when family visits.
Have a great weekend everyone!
